Normal Hearing and Hearing Loss
Normal hearing is when a person can detect sounds below 25 dBHL in the speech frequencies of 250 Hz to 8000 Hz.
Decrease in the sensitivity of hearing is hearing loss i.e. when the hearing sensitivity falls below 25 dB HL. Loss may be due to the involvement of one or more parts of the ear and may range from mild to profound degree.
Degree of hearing loss may range from mild to profound.
This audiogram gives a quick reference of the various degrees.
Hearing loss may be of one of the following types:
Conductive (involves outer or middle ear)
Sensorineural (involves inner ear)
Mixed (involves of the outer and/or middle and inner ear)
